Officials are warning New Yorkers about packages that contain seeds from China.
Similar packages have been received in other states and the USDA is investigating.
New York State Commissioner of Agriculture Richard Ball said residents should not plant or handle the seeds and should store them in a safe place where children and pets cannot access them.
Those individuals are also encouraged to contact the USDA by email.
Seeds imported into the country are tested to ensure quality and prevent introduction of invasive species, insects and diseases.
