Earlier this week Governor Andrew Cuomo said it could become necessary for hospital systems across the state to suspend elective surgeries.
Less than two days after that announcement, an email from leadership at UR Medicine to employees that was reported by 13WHAM-TV indicated that they would move in that direction.
The email said that decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis, as to whether the non-essential surgery would happen.
The plan is to evaluate the system’s situation on a daily basis. Monroe County, where URMC is based, has seen significant increases in total cases and hospitalization.
URMC also operates Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua. It’s not clear how that facility would be impacted by the decision.
