$27 million in Defense Department funding boosts New York’s microelectronics research

The Department of Defense has allocated nearly $27 million to the Northeast Regional Defense Technology Hub (NORDTECH) in New York to advance semiconductor research and workforce training, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer announced Wednesday.

This funding, part of the $2 billion CHIPS for America Defense Fund, will support research at upstate universities and institutions focusing on critical defense technologies like semiconductor chips and quantum computing.

NORDTECH, a consortium of academia and industry leaders, was established to foster innovation and attract new companies to New York’s growing semiconductor sector. Key partners include NY CREATES, Cornell University, and IBM. Schumer emphasized that this funding positions Upstate New York at the forefront of technological advances in the defense industry.
