Efforts to preserve Auburn’s first Catholic church, Holy Family, are intensifying as parishioners work to prevent the closure of the historic 1860s building.
The church held its final mass on June 16 after the Diocese of Rochester closed it, citing structural dangers that made entry unsafe.
Parishioners formed the Holy Family Organization to Preserve and Endure (HOPE), aiming to keep the building open for Catholic worship.
Represented by Roblee Historic Preservation, HOPE has submitted a landmark designation request to the Historic Resources Review Board.
The board will review the case on November 12, and if approved, the recommendation could lead to city council landmark status for the North Street site.
