Sanders opposes urging Justice Sotomayor to retire

Sen. Bernie Sanders rejected the idea of pressuring Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, 70, to retire while President Biden can appoint her successor. Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sanders said he doesn’t believe it’s “sensible” for Sotomayor to step down, despite some Democratic senators considering the move.

With President-elect Donald Trump soon to hold the power over judicial appointments and a likely GOP-controlled Senate, some Democrats worry that if Sotomayor remains on the bench, her replacement could tilt the court further to the right if a vacancy arises. The scenario mirrors the 2020 replacement of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg by conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

For now, no Democrat has publicly called on Sotomayor to retire.
