China expands influence in Latin America as U.S. rethinks strategy under Trump

China’s inauguration of the $3.5 billion Chancay megaport in Peru marks a bold step in its growing influence in Latin America, further challenging the U.S.’s traditional dominance in the region. With President-elect Donald Trump preparing to impose steep tariffs on Chinese goods and recalibrate U.S.-China relations, the port signals Beijing’s determination to bypass North America entirely, creating new trade routes to connect Latin America with Asia.

The Chancay port, built by China’s state-owned Cosco Shipping, is set to become a logistical hub, facilitating faster and larger shipments of goods like Brazilian soybeans and Chilean copper to China. It could also accommodate Chinese naval vessels, raising concerns among U.S. officials about Beijing’s strategic ambitions. While Trump’s administration may pressure Latin American countries with existing trade agreements, experts warn that the U.S. has fallen behind, allowing China to establish deep economic and political ties in the region.

As Trump’s incoming administration signals a tougher stance, Latin America faces a delicate balancing act between the two superpowers. While the U.S. retains goodwill in the region, analysts emphasize the need for a more robust and strategic approach to compete with China’s expansive Belt and Road Initiative investments.
