President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Gen. Keith Kellogg as a special envoy for Ukraine signals a new approach to ending the war, one that critics warn could play into Russian President Vladimir Putin’s hands, according to CNN.
Kellogg’s plan, detailed earlier this year, calls for freezing the frontlines with a ceasefire, indefinitely shelving Ukraine’s NATO ambitions, and conditioning U.S. aid on Kyiv negotiating with Moscow.
The proposal offers Russia partial sanctions relief and uses energy levies to fund Ukraine’s reconstruction, but it avoids demanding immediate territorial concessions from Ukraine.
Analysts warn, however, that a ceasefire may embolden Moscow to exploit the pause for further military gains, a tactic Putin has used before. Critics also highlight the risk of fractured Western unity and diminished support for Ukraine, leaving the nation vulnerable in an already dire conflict.
