A Sterling man faces multiple charges after an alleged assault at a village grocery store injured a bystander and caused a child to fall during the incident.

William R. David, 42, was arrested after Cayuga County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an altercation at the Bay Side Grocery on Main Street in Fair Haven around 9:30 a.m. on November 27. Authorities report that David allegedly punched another man in the back of the head during a verbal exchange.

The attack reportedly caused the victim, who was holding the hand of a 4-year-old girl, to fall. The child also fell, striking her head against a wall, though she did not sustain any injuries, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

David fled the scene before deputies arrived, prompting a search. Unable to locate him that day, investigators secured a warrant for his arrest. David later turned himself in at the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office the following morning.

He was charged with menacing in the third degree and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors. David was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Sterling Town Court at a later date.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office at 315-253-1222 or submit tips online.
