BorgWarner plans to lay off 30 employees at its Lansing plant by year’s end, following 50 layoffs that began in October, according to Teamsters Local 317.
The union, which represents over 700 workers, links the decision to declining hybrid vehicle component sales, particularly to Stellantis, a major automaker facing significant financial losses.
Union representatives claim the layoffs could be premature and possibly retaliatory for a summer strike that led to a new contract. BorgWarner disputes this, citing reduced customer orders as the reason.
Affected employees will receive limited post-layoff benefits, though concerns remain about the company’s mixed messages regarding its workforce needs.
