The New York Yankees finalized a trade to acquire outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-hander Cody Poteet, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Tuesday evening.
In the trade, the Yankees will receive $5 million to help offset Bellinger’s salary. He is set to earn $27.5 million in 2025 and holds a player option worth $25 million for 2026.
Bellinger, 29, a former National League MVP, put together a strong 2024 season. He posted a .266/.325/.426 slash line with 18 home runs for the Cubs but opted to remain under contract rather than test free agency.
This move comes on the heels of the Yankees signing left-handed starter Max Fried in free agency and trading for All-Star closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers.
