Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia, according to his son, Chip. Carter, the nation’s 39th president, was the longest-living in U.S. history and the only Georgian elected to the White House. His death follows the passing of his wife, Rosalynn, in 2023.

Carter served one term after defeating Gerald Ford in 1976 but lost re-election to Ronald Reagan in 1980. His presidency was defined by challenges such as the Iran hostage crisis, the Three Mile Island accident, and escalating Cold War tensions.

After leaving office, Carter’s humanitarian efforts through the Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity earned him a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, cementing his legacy as a global advocate for peace and human rights.
