Uber and Lyft drivers urged to file claims for share of $328 million settlement

  • Staff Report

Attorney General Letitia James is urging Uber and Lyft drivers across the state to file claims for their share of a historic $328 million settlement secured in November 2023. Drivers who believe they were underpaid between 2014 and 2017 must submit their claims by 11:59 p.m. on January 31, 2025, to ensure they receive the compensation they are owed.

“Rideshare drivers help keep New York moving and deserve full and fair compensation for their hard work,” said Attorney General James. “I am proud to have secured this landmark settlement with Uber and Lyft and to be returning these funds to the drivers that rightfully earned them.”

The settlement includes $290 million from Uber and $38 million from Lyft. It follows an investigation by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) that found both companies improperly deducted sales taxes and Black Car Fund fees from drivers’ earnings and failed to provide mandated paid sick leave.

Eligible drivers include those who worked for Uber between 2014 and 2017 and Lyft between 2015 and 2017 in New York State. Claims can be filed online via the designated settlement portals.

Attorney General James also mandated significant reforms under the settlement, including:

  • A minimum earnings floor guaranteeing drivers outside New York City at least $26 per hour, adjusted annually for inflation.
  • Paid sick leave, with drivers earning one hour of sick pay for every 30 hours worked, up to 56 hours per year.
  • Improved transparency, requiring Uber and Lyft to disclose ride fares to drivers and provide proper hiring notices and earnings statements.
  • Enhanced driver support, including multilingual in-app assistance and the ability to appeal deactivations from the platforms.

The Attorney General emphasized the urgency of the approaching deadline and encouraged eligible drivers who have not yet filed a claim—or who previously filed but did not receive a response—to act quickly. Over 88,000 claims have already been filed, but tens of thousands of eligible drivers remain unregistered.

Drivers can file claims or seek assistance through the following channels:

Additional assistance is available through the New York Taxi Workers Alliance at (718) 706-9892 or [email protected].

Attorney General James reaffirmed her office’s commitment to ensuring that workers receive their rightful wages and benefits, saying, “This settlement is about fairness, transparency, and respect for the hard work of New York’s rideshare drivers.”
