A new study by the Whitley Law Firm has revealed that New York is the easiest state in the United States to pass a written driving test, thanks to its low passing score, fewer questions, and no mandatory waiting period for retakes.
The study analyzed data from driving-tests.org and driversprep.com, scoring states on factors such as the number of questions, the passing threshold, and the waiting period required to retake the test after a failed attempt. New York received an index score of 95.61 out of 100, significantly outperforming other states.
New York’s written test includes just 20 questions, with a minimum passing score of 70%, requiring candidates to answer at least 14 questions correctly. Unlike many states, New York allows immediate retakes, further simplifying the process for aspiring drivers.
Tied for second place were New Mexico and Massachusetts, scoring 82.85 out of 100. Their written tests feature 25 questions with a minimum passing score of 72%, requiring at least 18 correct answers. Texas ranked fourth with an 81.38 score, offering a 30-question test and a 70% passing threshold.
Virginia, meanwhile, ranked as the hardest state to pass the written test, with an index score of just 21.39. Prospective drivers in Virginia face a 35-question test with a required passing score of 86%, meaning they must answer at least 30 questions correctly. Additionally, a 15-day waiting period is required between attempts.
The study highlighted stark disparities between states. For instance, Indiana’s test includes 50 questions and an 84% passing threshold, while states like Wyoming and Colorado require only 25 questions and an 80% passing rate.
