The Finger Lakes Land Trust is mourning the loss of longtime member, volunteer, and conservationist Jim Kersting, who passed away on November 5, 2024. A devoted advocate for nature, Kersting’s legacy will be felt across the region for generations.

Kersting, alongside his wife Sara, joined the Land Trust in 1993 and quickly became pivotal figures in the organization’s early efforts. The couple led the Western Lakes chapter and donated a conservation easement on their property in Canadice to protect the land they cherished. Kersting also served multiple terms on the Land Trust’s Board of Directors, including as President.

Known for his love of the outdoors, Kersting embraced the natural beauty of the Finger Lakes through activities like cross-country skiing at Harriet Hollister Spencer Recreation Area, deer hunting on his property, and paddling on Canadice Lake. His passion for conservation and outdoor recreation often intertwined—most notably in 2008, when he biked across the United States with fellow Land Trust President Brad Edmondson to raise funds for the organization.

Kersting’s efforts left an indelible mark on the region, including his contributions to the Wesley Hill Nature Preserve. His enduring commitment to protecting the natural world stands as a testament to his character and vision.

The Land Trust expressed its deep gratitude for Kersting’s contributions, noting that his work ensured that the Finger Lakes’ natural beauty will be preserved for future generations.
