Spotted lanternfly poses major threat to NY grape growers

  • Staff Report

Cornell University experts warn that the invasive spotted lanternfly could cost New York grape growers millions in losses if left unmanaged. Projections estimate losses of $1.5 million in the first year of infestation, escalating to $8.8 million by the third year, based on impacts observed in Pennsylvania.

Spotted lanternflies damage grapevines by feeding on sap and causing mold growth that reduces grape quality.

Though first detected in the Finger Lakes in July 2024, no major effects have been reported yet. Researchers aim to provide growers with cost estimates for prevention strategies to mitigate potential damage.
