FRIDAY HS BASKETBALL REPORT: Honeoye’s Landon Washburn joins 1000-point club; Newark boys stun Wayne in overtime

Friday night brought a jam-packed slate of Wayne-Finger Lakes high school basketball as 42 teams took the court across the region.

Highlights included Honeoye sophomore Landon Washburn joining the 1000-point club in a non-league home win over Livonia and the Newark boys pulling off a stunning upset against Wayne in overtime.

BOYS BASKETBALL (2/7)

Overtime

The Eagles started strong, racing to a 12-2 lead in the first six minutes and holding a 14-7 advantage after the first quarter. Wayne maintained control through halftime, leading 26-20, and entered the fourth up by three after Cam Blankenberg’s clutch buzzer-beating three-pointer. The Reds surged ahead late, taking a 50-43 lead with under 40 seconds left, but Blankenberg sparked a dramatic comeback for the Eagles. He converted an and-one layup, then sank two crucial free throws to tie the game at 50 with 17 seconds remaining. Newark had a chance to win, but Blankenberg’s key block sent the game to overtime. In the extra period, the Reds outscored Wayne 18-13 to split the season series. This marked Wayne’s second loss in seven games after starting the season 11-0.

The game was tied at 50 with 48.6 seconds left in the third quarter when the Wildcats went on a quick 4-0 run to take the lead heading into the fourth, where they maintained control the rest of the way. Marcus Whitman improved to 11-2 with Brody Royston in the starting lineup and extended their win streak to five, matching their longest of the season.

The game was tied at 33 at halftime, but Honeoye caught fire in the second half, outscoring Livonia 28-11 in the third quarter. Landon Washburn poured in 18 of his game-high 36 points during the period, helping build a double-digit lead that Honeoye never relinquished. The win marked their 14th straight victory, the longest active streak in the Wayne-Finger Lakes region. Washburn became the seventh player in the Wayne-Finger Lakes to reach the 1000-point mark this season, joining Bloomfield’s Calla McCombs (junior), Marcus Whitman’s Brody Royston (senior), Palmyra-Macedon’s Taryn Goodness (senior), Newark’s TaKyla Vaughn (senior), Clyde-Savannah’s Taylor Carnevale (junior), Lyons’ Jamire Johnson (junior).
