State lawmakers push for delay in Medicaid home care transition

New York lawmakers are calling for more time to transition a $9 billion Medicaid home care program to a single company, Public Partnerships LLC (PPL), citing concerns about meeting the April 1 deadline. With only 40,000 of 280,000 consumers and caregivers registered, officials insist the process is on track, but legislators remain skeptical.

Health leaders defended the timeline, arguing the transition will curb Medicaid costs while protecting home care users. Critics, however, fear disruption for thousands relying on the program. Some lawmakers urged the state to request an extension before it’s too late, while Gov. Hochul’s administration seeks an investigation into opposition ads.

The debate reflects broader tensions over health care policy, including the state’s reluctance to join a national nurse licensing agreement and efforts to ensure transgender health care access.
