New York Attorney General Letitia James secured over $6.9 million in refunds and $7 million in canceled debt from CityMD after an investigation found the urgent care provider illegally billed patients for COVID-19 tests. Some patients were charged up to two years after testing, despite state and federal protections against such fees.

As a result, CityMD refunded 215,000 patients, canceled outstanding bills for 87,000 more, and agreed to improve billing transparency. The company will also pay $95,000 in penalties and face additional fines for future violations.

James urged New Yorkers to report fraudulent medical billing practices. The settlement ensures CityMD follows the law, preventing patients from facing unexpected costs during public health emergencies.
