Tens thousands of federal employees face layoffs under the new administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Governor Kathy Hochul is rolling out a new effort to welcome displaced workers into New York State government. The “You’re Hired” initiative aims to recruit experienced public sector professionals and connect them with opportunities in state service.

“The federal government might say, ‘You’re fired,’ but here in New York, we say, ‘You’re hired.’ In fact, we love federal workers,” Hochul said. “Whatever your skills, we value public service. Check out potential jobs at ny.gov/wewantyou. Come join our New York State family.”

To support the effort, the state has launched a new web portal, NY.gov/WeWantYou, providing job listings, career resources, and guidance for federal employees interested in transitioning to state service. Hochul also released a video message encouraging federal workers to apply, which is available to stream on YouTube.

New York has already implemented significant workforce reforms under Hochul’s leadership. In 2023, the governor extended 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave to the entire state workforce for the first time. In 2024, the state launched NY HELPS, temporarily waiving civil service exam requirements for many job vacancies. This program has resulted in nearly 24,000 state government hires and 6,000 local government appointments. Additionally, the state has opened 10 Centers for Careers in Government to assist job seekers.

State officials emphasized the benefits of public service careers in New York. “By coming to work for the Empire State, you’ll have the opportunity to help your neighbors, community, and state in a variety of ways — serving, protecting, and caring for your fellow New Yorkers in solid, stable jobs,” said Timothy R. Hogues, president of the Civil Service Commission.

New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon echoed that sentiment, highlighting the stability and benefits of government jobs. “Careers in public service offer stability, competitive pay, great benefits, and a chance to make a difference,” she said.

With the launch of this initiative, New York is positioning itself as a landing spot for skilled federal workers seeking new opportunities in government.
