NY prisons issue cease-and-desist orders amid strike

New York State Police have issued cease-and-desist orders to staff at four prisons—Elmira, Collins, Groveland, and Wende—as the state moves to end an ongoing corrections officers’ strike, according to 13WHAM-TV. Twenty-eight workers, including one who spoke anonymously, received the orders from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, citing violations of the Taylor Law, which prohibits public sector strikes.

The worker, served at home late Sunday, claims the move is an illegal union-busting tactic. The strike, driven by worsening working conditions, has led to tensions with Governor Kathy Hochul. Officers argue that state leaders ignored their concerns for years, prompting the standoff.

Union attorneys will appear in New York State Supreme Court to challenge the orders, as officers continue pressing for negotiations.
