NOAA job cuts leave impact uncertain for New York offices

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) laid off 880 probationary employees on Feb. 27, affecting about 7% of its workforce. NOAA oversees the National Weather Service, which has a regional offices in Buffalo and Binghamton, but officials declined to confirm if local jobs were impacted.

A review of the Buffalo office’s staff page showed no apparent changes, though the climate program contact was reassigned. The office remains responsible for forecasting, severe weather alerts, and historical climate data for Monroe and surrounding counties.

NOAA, established in 1970, continues its mission of monitoring and predicting climate and weather patterns despite the workforce reduction. The full impact of these cuts on operations remains unclear.
