Ontario County is implementing new technology to cut down on road salt usage and protect water quality, thanks to a grant from the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The funding will support live edge plow blades, salt application controls, and weather monitoring equipment to minimize salt dispersal.
Canadice Highway Superintendent Jeremy Fraim has already equipped his fleet with the new blades and a weather monitoring camera to optimize road treatment. The initiative benefits both local towns and Rochester, as Canadice and Hemlock Lakes supply the city’s drinking water.
Officials emphasize that this project not only improves efficiency but also keeps funding within the local economy. Applications for the DEC’s water quality grant program open in mid-spring for municipalities looking to participate.
