Hornell officials plan to construct a new street connecting state Route 36 to Shawmut Drive, improving access to the city’s industrial park. The project, led by the Industrial Development Agency, aims to boost economic development while easing truck traffic in residential areas.
The new road will intersect with Hornell Street Extension and support businesses like Alstom and Stern & Stern Industries. It will be built during the first phase of New York’s $55 million Route 36 Gateway Corridor project, which also includes road upgrades, a roundabout, and pedestrian-friendly improvements.
Construction is expected to begin this year with local funding. Officials believe the project will unlock the area’s economic potential. The city has yet to name the new street.
