BOYS BASKETBALL: Cam Blankenberg leads Wayne back to state semifinals

Wayne entered the 2024-25 season with their sights set on a state title after coming up just short last season.

On Saturday evening at Rush-Henrietta High School, the Eagles took another step toward their goal, knocking off Williamsville South, 69-61, in a rematch of last season’s Class A state quarterfinal.

From the opening tip, Wayne (23-2) took control, scoring first and never relinquishing the lead. They built a five-point advantage after the first quarter, extended it to nine by halftime, and maintained a double-digit lead heading into the final frame, holding off any Williamsville South (19-6) comeback attempts.

Junior Cam Blankenberg delivered another dominant performance, pouring in 22 of his game-high 32 points in the first half, nearly matching the Billies’ entire output through 16 minutes. Aidan Twist added 18 points, while Richard Miles provided a spark with 16, including 13 in the third quarter, highlighted by three crucial three-pointers.

The Eagles now turn their attention to the Class A semifinals, where they will face undefeated Glens Falls (25-0), winners of 52 straight games, on Saturday, March 22, at 3:15 p.m. in Binghamton.
