A new proposal seeks to transform the historic Wells College campus into a dynamic educational and residential community, integrating an International Baccalaureate (IB) boarding school, an Indigenous college, and a senior living community.

The plan is a joint effort by Summit World Schools, the Hiawatha Institute for Indigenous Knowledge, and Grande Venues. It comes as Wells College, facing financial challenges, was recently named to the Landmark Society of Western New York’s Five to Revive list, which highlights historic properties in need of investment and preservation.

According to the proposal, Summit World Schools will develop a globally recognized IB boarding school for students in grades 9-14, focusing on leadership, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. The Hiawatha Institute for Indigenous Knowledge will establish an Indigenous college, providing cultural and educational programs to honor and preserve Indigenous heritage. Additionally, a senior living community will be introduced, fostering intergenerational mentorship and lifelong learning.

The redevelopment will be executed in phases, starting with campus acquisition and zoning approvals in early 2025. The IB school is expected to open in September 2025, followed by the introduction of senior living facilities between 2026 and 2028. The project will also leverage historic tax credits to support renovations while preserving the college’s architectural heritage.

Wells College, founded in 1868, has long been a pillar of higher education in the Finger Lakes region. However, financial instability has led to uncertainty about its future. The Landmark Society’s designation underscores the significance of preserving the campus while adapting it for sustainable use.

Project leaders emphasize that the initiative will not only preserve the historic campus but also generate economic opportunities, create jobs, and provide valuable educational resources. The integration of a senior community within an academic setting aims to enrich both students and residents through mentorship and shared experiences.

While the proposal presents an ambitious vision, its success will depend on securing approvals, funding, and community support. The redevelopment team is expected to engage with local stakeholders as the process moves forward.
