Cayuga County plans to hire private security for its temporary offices at 63 Genesee St. in Auburn, allocating $222,646 to Allied Universal. The county is renting the building for $348,000 annually while its office building undergoes a two-year closure.
Typically, retired sheriff’s deputies handle security in public facilities, but their authority does not extend to leased properties. After exploring other options, officials determined that neither Auburn police nor the sheriff’s office had available staff. Allied Universal was selected through a state contract process.
While the county budgeted for security, some costs may be reimbursed through state and federal aid for the Department of Social Services, which will operate from the building. Officials continue to review procurement details before final approval.
