The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office received a Certificate of Accreditation from the New York State Sheriffs’ Association, recognizing the county jail for meeting or exceeding 166 standards. The accreditation covers areas such as fiscal management, use of force, health standards, and public relations. Sheriff Brian Schenck credited Sergeant Stan Silliman and the custody division for their role in achieving the designation.

The department welcomed Deputy Agnes Olson as a lateral transfer to the Road Patrol Division. February also saw law enforcement participation in community events, including the Fair Haven Ice Drags, where Deputy Val Stephens and IDO Justin Leszczynski patrolled on snowmobiles.

School outreach efforts included a career presentation in the Moravia School District by Student Resource Officer Sean DeRosa, Deputy Val Stephens, and Deputy Brandon Androsko. The sheriff’s office also recognized school resource officers on National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day, thanking them for their work in area schools.

Sheriff Schenck partnered with Cayuga Lake National Bank representatives to present a fraud prevention session for staff from the Office for the Aging and the Social Services Adult Protective Unit. The presentation provided insights into scams and fraud prevention, with the sheriff advising, “If it sounds too good to be true, it’s too good to be true—it’s a scam!”

In February, the department handled 1,474 service calls, made 25 arrests, issued 111 traffic tickets, and responded to 61 motor vehicle accidents. The Criminal Investigations Division closed 16 cases, and the county jail had an average daily population of 121 inmates. The office also processed 202 civil papers and collected more than $77,000 in civil transactions.
