Former correction officers returned to the Capitol Thursday with a quieter message, trading protest signs for calls to reform — not repeal — New York’s HALT Act, which limits solitary confinement.
Once staunch opponents, the officers said they’ve reexamined HALT’s intent and now support restructuring it to ensure rehabilitative programs are better staffed and funded. They also criticized their terminations and loss of benefits following the strike, asking Gov. Hochul to include them in future reform discussions.
While Hochul firmly rejected rehiring them, conversations are unfolding. In a symbolic moment, one officer embraced prison reform advocate Lukee Forbes, with both agreeing on the need for a safer, more effective correctional system.
