Krueger urges Hochul to sign health data privacy bill

State Sen. Liz Krueger is pressing Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign the New York Health Information Privacy Act, citing growing concerns over the misuse of consumer data after DNA testing firm 23andMe filed for bankruptcy.

Krueger, who sponsored the bill with Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal, says the legislation would close gaps left by federal law, giving New Yorkers stronger control over their personal health information. The bill targets companies that collect or sell health-related data, including from apps and smart devices.

Critics argue the bill is too vague and could hurt businesses. But Krueger insists its protections are urgently needed in light of 23andMe’s potential data sale, which she called a wake-up call for state-level action.
