Steuben County ramps up EMS hiring to fill care gaps

Steuben County is launching a major EMS hiring push to combat a growing shortage of volunteer responders in rural areas, according to the Corning Leader.

Officials plan to hire 24 full- and part-time EMTs and paramedics to provide 24/7 coverage from bases in Hammondsport and Woodhull. The move follows years of declining volunteer numbers and the recent dissolution of Hammondsport’s ambulance corps, which transferred its resources to the county.

The $1.1 million effort, funded in the current budget, aims to stabilize urgent care access without draining other departments. Hiring is expected to begin by early summer.
