New York’s Health Department has agreed to extend deadlines for thousands relying on a $9 billion Medicaid home care program, aiming to prevent care disruptions during its controversial transition to a new management company, according to court filings.

Under a proposed court order, users of the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program now have until May 15 to register with Public Partnerships LLC, with workers getting until June 6. The extension follows backlash, a federal lawsuit, and involvement from the U.S. Department of Justice, which cited concern for uninterrupted care.

Though the state defends the transition as essential reform, critics argue the process has been mishandled, leaving vulnerable New Yorkers at risk. A federal judge will decide on the order’s approval Thursday.
