The University of Rochester Medicine Clinical and Translational Science Institute has received more than $29 million in federal grants to support research aimed at turning scientific discoveries into treatments.
The National Institutes of Health funding will continue through 2032 and support training, clinical trials, research projects and informatics services, the university said.
The grants come from the NIH's National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences through the Clinical and Translational Science Awards Program. The Rochester institute was among the first in the country to receive funding through the program in 2006.
UR Medicine said the institute has brought in more than $157 million in federal funding over 20 years. It provides education, career development, services and funding to research teams.
The new funding is organized around translational science and improving health for all. Plans include using artificial intelligence and machine learning to reduce research barriers, accelerating clinical trials and expanding access to research opportunities.
The institute also plans to strengthen ties with rural communities through direct engagement. It is working with Common Ground Health and the Center for Community Health and Prevention on those activities.
