Fermented Foods: Learn how to ferment vegetables at home.

Have you wondered about all the talk concerning probiotics and what you might be able to do with some of that cabbage you see at stands across the Finger Lakes? Find out as Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension is continuing their 2019 Food Preservation Series with a class on fermented foods. The workshop will be held at the Seneca County CCE office, 3rd floor of the Main Street Shop Centre in Waterloo and led by CCE nutrition staff and Master Food Preservers. Participants will receive educational materials, taste samples, and the know-how to safely make fermented foods at home. Cost is $15. Registration is required and space is limited. Fermented foods are preserved using an age-old process that not only boosts the food’s shelf life, but also gives your body a boost of healthy probiotics, which are live microorganisms crucial to healthy digestion. So what are examples of fermented foods? Yogurt, beer, sauerkraut, kimchi, sourdough bread, and coffee are all examples of fermented foods! This workshop will focus on how to naturally ferment vegetables at home. Vegetables in season now such as cabbage (Sauerkraut), carrots, and beets found at our Farmers’ Markets and produce stands,are delicious fermented and will preserve these foods well into the winter. Come learn the facts, the science, and nutritional benefits of fermenting vegetables at home in this informational workshop and put your own sauerkraut on your next home-grilled hot dog!
