This Heritage Weekend, June 14-15, visitors will find themselves in 1826 in the Queen of Canal Towns. Join costumed docents as you explore the five museums on Historic Palmyra’s Trail Pass. Palmyra was the 3rd busiest port in 1826 and the museums will be waiting to share that era of Palmyra, as well as of course the history from the surrounding years as well. Just steps from the Erie Canal, this area was a hub of activity and it would not have been strange to see mules, workers, boarders, and travelers passing through. Many of the buildings of Historic Palmyra once served the canal in this era. Take a step back and experience 1826 Palmyra for this Heritage Weekend.
This year’s event features the grand opening of the newly updated Erie Canal Depot Museum. The newest addition to the museum will be an Erie Canal boat cabin, created to look like you’ve stepped right on board a real canal boat. This is found alongside many of the museum’s unique features such as a 3D mural of a canal boat, original mule stalls that can be seen through a trap door, and dioramas of Lock 60 and Gallup’s Bridge.
This event is sponsored in part by the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the NYS Canal Corporation. This special weekend is part of New York State’s Path Through History Weekend.
The museums will be open 10:30 am – 4:30 pm on June 14 and 15. Tours begin at 132 Market St., Palmyra. Applicable admission pricing applies.
